Spoleto (2019)
Umbria, Italy
The hills of Umbria have cradled human aspiration for centuries, their ancient slopes bearing witness to countless monuments raised in devotion and ambition. Yet few structures command the landscape as the Duomo of Spoleto commands its hillside perch—a declaration of faith rendered in stone, rising above the earthen town that nestles beneath it.
The cathedral’s dome dominates the composition with an almost grave authority. Built across generations, it represents the accumulated labour of artisans and believers, each contributing their skill to a vision that transcended their own lifespans. The bell tower stands sentinel beside it, its austere lines reaching towards an indifferent sky. Together, they anchor the spiritual heart of this ancient city.
The Duomo embodies something profound about human nature: our compulsion to build something greater than ourselves, to reach upwards even in humility, to create spaces where the transcendent might touch the ordinary world.
