Vennel (2019)

Edinburgh, UK

The fortress rises above the cobbled street like a command written in stone. From this vantage point—nestled within the narrow confines of the Vennel—the castle does not simply sit upon its volcanic crag; it looms, dominates, insists upon its presence with an authority that five centuries of habitation have done nothing to diminish.

The castle’s walls rise grey and resolute, bearing the weather of centuries. Its ramparts and towers speak of defence, of siege, of the countless moments when this stronghold determined the fate of kingdoms. Yet from street level, one experiences it differently than from a distance. The sheer vertical mass becomes almost oppressive, a weight suspended overhead, a reminder that this city was built in the presence of force.

There is something profoundly Scottish in this arrangement: the past pressing down upon the present, history inescapable, the fortress eternal.
