Orvieto (2018)

Umbria, Italy

Orvieto’s medieval streets demand passage.

This archway—austere, functional, unremarkable—has sheltered thousands of journeys. The passage frames a deeper journey still, light spilling through to reveal more streets beyond, more walls, more passages. The ivy creeping up the left side softens nothing; it only emphasises the passage of decades, the slow conquest of stone by patient vegetation.

Orvieto doesn’t present itself all at once. Instead it reveals itself in sections, through arches, around corners. Each passage leads to another, each archway frames a further mystery. Walk these streets and you become part of a narrative that predates you and will outlast you, following footsteps worn into the stone by centuries of those who came before.
